Im really curious to see if other English speakers actually have any difficult with understanding us. I feel like i have a standard American accent, but a lot of people around me talk with a very heavy accent, but it always seemed easy to understand (probably because i grew up here).

Interesting - did you not run the Welsh sentences past native speakers? Hoffi'r cath wen ydw i .... that's not right. Cath would take soft mutation to gath after "the/'r" and it would be more usually to say it this way "dw i'n hoffi'r gath wen"="am i like the cat white"

Sixth (?) generation Texan here. My wife is Canadian and it is hilarious to hear my in-laws try to say, "Y'all." It sounds like they are trying to get the full "you all" in there. I'm like, just say, "Yahl." Them: "Yooual." Why is this so hard? 😂

To answer it shortly: Nah. (jk I'm biased because I'm swiss.) The truth is it obviously depends on a variety of factors, such as the native language of a learner and whether or not they already have learned other (similar) languages and are familiar with language learning. I mean, I went to school with some swiss people who had issues learning standard german, even though our specific dialect (Basel german, a high alemannic dialect) wasn't that far off from german in terms of vowel and consonant shifts. We still pronounce our "L"s like "L" (as opposed to central swiss dialects who will pronounce them like a german "U"), and our "K"s didn't shift into a hard "CH" sound (Kääs/Kees instead of Chääs/Chees -> cheese, as you might have figured), so you'd think it should be easy enough for any swiss person from Basel to learn standard german. But that's the point, even if your native "language" is the closest possible thing to actual german, you might still struggle. Conversely, you might be italian and learn german with ease (does not count for the people of Bozen/Bolzano, as they technically learn german at home/in school, so we won't consider them here).

Translating foreign expressions is quite a common thing. The germans do it with some memes and random expressions (Ich bin Magie -> I'm magic instead of "Ich bin 'n Magier" -> I'm a magician or stuff like the "Me when..." memes -> "Ich wenn..." which isn't technically incorrect but it still sounds strange), the italians did it in New York and NJ with stuff like "breaking balls" (rompere le palle) and they're currently doing it by literally translating stuff like "what the cock" (ma che cazzo) or "in mouth of wolf" (in bocca al lupo -> good luck). That's not a widespread thing though, as far as I can tell. Probably also because most italians don't actually speak english very well.

Haha olly, i somehow agree with you without knowing any of these languages. Yet, you must touch on the subject of Dravidian languages, like Kannada, Tamizh etc. The most interesting concept about them is agglutination like Hungarian, Turkish as well as their relative simple grammar- animate male and female, inanimate neuter apart from the plural forms.

I would love to hear your take on the Ozark accent. No one seems to get it right. The show Ozark made it way to southern (they did film in GA after all). While it’s mostly part of the Midwest it’s definitely distinct from the rest of the region. I’m from there and I say it’s sounds like if someone had a wad a rocks in their mouth, leaned real heavy on their Rs, and said things like “cattywompas” and “piebald”😂

You just made me seriously homesick. I don't sound particularly Texan until I've had a bit to drink, but it's always there. One of my favorite experiences was being in a pub in Nottingham very late one evening (early in the morning?) and talking about accents. I said I was fascinated by how you could localize someone very accurately in England by the accent. I was then told, "Yeah, you Americans really don't have that many accents." I proceeded to take them on a 10 minute tour of accents around the USA. The best compliment I got was the bartender you just said, "That was magnificent!" after I finished. A great time was had by all.

I'm sorry but you still have not answered the question. Where did the southern accent come from? So let me help you out. The so-called southern accent dates back to the 17th & 18th century by English and Scots-Irish immigrants who came to the United States. Plus by the 19th century further influences came from London upper class society. Back then it was considered that only high society folks spoke in such an accent to distinguish themselves, as they would say, from commoners. As they felt resentment if anyone would ever confuse them with commoners. We're talking West Virginia, Virginia, North & South Carolinas, Georgia, and every state west up to Texas. With the exception of Louisiana which the Creole influence came from french settlers of the time. So what once was an accent only fit for high society a few centuries ago is now a common accent among everyday folks. Fact. PS: We learned this in university history studies.

I grew up in south-central Indiana, in a town that had had an influx of Kentucky coalminers in the late 1800s. They brought with them a twangy drawl that some locals still had in their speech in the mid-20th century. I only sound truly like home when I talk on the phone, after 50 years out of state.
